We’ve had an amazing few days here in Costa Rica since our last update!
After exploring San Jose, we began our journey to the Caribbean coast, and we didn’t waste any time before having the opportunity to try new things. Along the way, we stopped at a local fruit stand where we tried at least 10 new tropical fruits. Some favorites included granadilla and rambutan. Then we took a scenic boat ride to Nuevo Pacuare.
On our second day here, we learned about the local school, Barre de Pacuare, which supports 7 local students. They are a small but mighty community. While at the school, we created a garden and planted seeds, cleared the grounds of leaves and old coconuts, and were rewarded with fresh ones! We got to enjoy a sweet drink right from the coconut and also try its fresh fruit. We topped off this experience by getting to watch 70 sea turtles hatch and helped to release them into the sea. Talk about a wow moment!!
Yesterday, we got a jump start on our service work. In just one day, we completed a mural, painted two buildings, and deconstructed an old sidewalk to make room for a new one that we will build today. Participants have done a great job stepping out of their comfort zones, trying new foods, building new friendships, and learning to build community. We’ve also done many workshops, reflecting on the impact of service work and talking about how this connects to being Jewish.
Looking ahead, we are excited for two more days of service work and of course to head to the beach on Friday, where we will celebrate Shabbat, and continue exploring what it means to live the pura vida life!
