Costa Rica: Extending our Family

By Mitzvah Corps Costa Rica 1 2018 Participants

We stayed in a lodge built by the Bri Bri family who created and runs Aventura Naturales, an eco-tourism business in Yorkin. We arrived to the community the only way you can – in long canoes carved from cedar trees. The limited electricity, cell service, and running water quickly turned from a curse into a blessing, just like the words that Bilaam spoke in last week’s Torah portion. The lack of conveniences enabled us to slow down, open up, and find the potential for learning and humor in every situation. Our group formed very strong bonds with each other and also with our Bri Bri hosts. Just before we left, Doña Ottilia and her son, Beto, sang us a song: “Our family is your family, your family is our family, and we are happy to be together.”

Before leaving Yorkin, we each left a note in the community’s guest book at the lodge.

¡Muchas gracias para todo! Yo tengue el mejor semana de mi vida. Me encanta Yorkin, y yo quiero regresar en el futuro.
-Emily

I don’t know much Spanish, but thank you so much for your kindness and acceptance of our group into Yorkin, and into your family. I won’t forget it…or your cute babies.

I had a great time. Even though I had trouble communicating with the family because I don’t speak Spanish, I was still able to create relationships with people in the community. I had a great time and wish I didn’t have to leave. Always look for the full moon. Thank you for giving me a great experience here.

¡Hola! First I would just like to say what an amazing experience I had staying here in your beautiful community. From the moment I stepped off of the canoe, I knew I would love it here. Everyone was so welcoming and the wildlife is so pretty. Seeing all of the exotic, tropical plants growing fresh fruit was a cool experience! I loved being able to stay in a place with people living so harmoniously with nature. From the opportunity to cook in the kitchen making tortillas to working on digging out the trenches for the aqueduct pipes was amazing. But my favorite part of staying here was spending time with all of the wonderful BriBri people. Thank you so much for this learning experience!
-Emma
